Sweet P is really sick!

He had croup last week, but Sunday night he woke up with a low grade fever. No fever on Monday am, but again Monday pm he had low grade fever.He didn't have fever yesterday am but last night, however, he spiked a high fever--it was higher than I've ever seen it so I had his ped paged after hours. She was concerned that it was either an ear infection, the flu, or both and wanted to see him first thing this am. We just got home from seeing her and he does have a a nasty ear infection in his right ear and tested positive for type A flu. The test was a yucky nose swab that made him really upset--"They just hurt me mom!". She is 99% certain it is swine flu as they aren't seeing seasonal flu yet. He's got a really raspy productive cough, drainage, congestion, fever, snotty nose, peaked/watery eyes, and complaining of a headache.

Our ped doesn't recommend Tamiflu for anyone under the age of 2 or over the age of 65. Since his ear infection is most likely caused from the flu, it's probably viral and the antibiotic won't help. But since it's impossible to know w/o testing the icky puss/fluid (which isn't recommended anymore) whether it's bacterial or viral, we may as well treat it with antibiotics just in case. We are to alternate a teaspoon and a half of fever meds (Motrin and Tylenol) and cough/cold meds plus the antibiotic.

And since P has swine flu, we'll all most likely get it. The good news is it only lasts 3-5 days and he's hopefully over the worst of it. It's most contagious during the fever stage and isn't to return to school until fever free for 48 hours. I called his school to let them know he wouldn't be returning until Monday and they confirmed my suspicion that they are seeing a lot of this. He's missing their annual family picnic on Friday which was rescheduled from last week due to bad weather. Is it wrong of me to hope it's rescheduled again?

I feel awful for him as he just had croup last week. He's seriously has had a every 2 weeks since he started preschool. Please pray my Sweet P has a speedy recover (and Harper stays well)!
